MATER IN MOTION

Today we kicked of our Transportation, Force, and Mation Unit 3 via a design challenge of trying to get Mater off of a cliff in Radiater Springs safely to his friend Lighning McQueen on the other side.  They had to design a transportation structure that could get Mater across the line safely.  Ask you student about what he/she did.  Be sure to ask them about the following vocabulary words:

transportation
force
motion
friction

We will test their structures by attaching them to the line and applying force (by way of letting the air out of a balloon) to put them in motion.

STAR SCIENTIST

Camryn was our Star Scientist this week.  She read a really cool flip book.  She and her mother, Mrs. Martindale showed us how to make Elephant Toothpaste.  We learned about variables in an experiement and saw an example of an exothermic chemical reaction.  Not only does this create toothpaste fit for your pet elephant, it creates heat to keep you warm in these cold winter months!!  Read below for direction on how to do this at home.
  • A clean 16 ounce plastic soda bottle
  • 1/2 cup 20-volume hydrogen peroxide liquid (20-volume is a 6% solution, ask an adult to get this from a beauty supply store or hair salon)
  • 1 Tablespoon (one packet) of dry yeast
  • 3 Tablespoons of warm water
  • Liquid dish washing soap
  • Food coloring
  • Small cup
  • Safety goggles

NOTE: As you can see from the picture, foam will overflow from the bottle, so be sure to do this experiment on a washable surface, or place the bottle on a tray.
1. Hydrogen peroxide can irritate skin and eyes, so put on those safety goggles and ask an adult to carefully pour the hydrogen peroxide into the bottle.

2. Add 8 drops of your favorite food coloring into the bottle.

3. Add about 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap into the bottle and swish the bottle around a bit to mix it.

4. In a separate small cup, combine the warm water and the yeast together and mix for about 30 seconds.
5. Now the adventure starts! Pour the yeast water mixture into the bottle (a funnel helps here) and watch the foaminess begin!

She also created and presented a power point presentation so that we could get to know her better.  Click here to view Camryn's All About Me Presentation.

Enjoy the pictures!

STAR SCIENTIST

Maddie was our Star Scientist this week.  She read Elf on the Shelf to us and discussed the science involved in golf balls.  We learned about air resistance and aerodynamics!

Maddi and her mother taught us how to create a Tornado in a Bottle.  You can find out how to do this at home by reading below!
1. Fill one jar full of water.
2. Add 1 tsp. of clear dishsoap.
3 Add 1 tsp. of vinegar.
4. Shake it up.
5. Swirl it around and take cover!!

WINTER BREAK SUMDOG WINNERS

The winner of our Winter Break Sumdog Competition is......... Zane Palino with 3724 correct responses.

2nd place was Sydney Hurt with 2029 correct responses.

3rd place was Braeden Hindes with 1151 correct responses.

Congratulations to those students!  They will receive a certificate and a chance to eat lunch in the classroom with Mr. Hardy and a friend of their choice!  Look for details coming soon about our next competition!
